For the past 15 years digital dermatitis, also known as mortellaro, footwart, hairy heel wart
or strawberry wart, has become an increasing concern for dairymen throughout the country. It has
also been identified in several parts of the world including Mexico, Canada and Europe.
Presently, the cause of this disease is still under investigation.
Digital dermatitis initially will develop as a round or oval lesion, usually on the dorsal cleft
of the toe or the interdigital cleft near the bulb of the heel. At maturity the lesion will increase
its size in diameter and be slightly to very elevated. One or more feet can be affected, causing
severe lameness and pain. Loss of body weight is evident and decreased milk production occurs.
Many treatments have been suggested for controlling digital dermatitis. However, recurrence
generally happens if the base of the lesion is not entirely removed.
EXAMPLE
I have used many products for treating hairy warts during my
30 years in the hoof trimming business. After using Hoof Mate, I
was amazed. The warts were gone and there was a noticeable increase
in weight gain and milk productions. I feel that it is a small price
to pay for the results it provides. --Daryl--Hooftrimmer, CA
